“SUCCESSFULLY MANAGING SYSTEMIC RISK: DEPOSIT INSURANCE IN A TURBULENT WORLD”
On Thursday, September 28, the IADI held its 2023 Annual Conference: “Successfully Managing Systemic Risk: Deposit Insurance in a Turbulent World.”
During the day-long conference, moderated by master of ceremonies, MSIC President & CEO Mike Hanson, over 210 attendees representing deposit insurers from around the world focused on systemic risk and the importance and relevance of deposit insurance. Attendees heard welcome remarks from Mr. Hanson, IADI Secretary General Eva Hüpkes, and IADI President and Executive Council Chair Alejandro López. Following the opening addresses, participants heard from Harvard Law School’s Nomura Professor of International Financial Regulatory Practice and Former Member of the Federal Reserve Board Daniel Tarullo with his address regarding “US bank supervision and deposit insurance after the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank.” Annual Conference Keynote Speaker Martin J. Gruenberg, FDIC Chairman and former President of IADI, then provided an address about the recent Silicon Valley Bank collapse in March 2023, the implications for deposit insurance and stability following the collapse, and IADI’s role in global financial leadership. Throughout the day, a number of different panels made-up of IADI members discussed banking turmoil, cooperatives, and deposit insurance regulation, resolution and expansion. Panelists provided presentations and comments sourced from their own geographical areas and addressed how and why deposit insurance is significant in the fight against systemic risk and consumer contagion.
